If clothing defined our appearance, then "The Bus" defined our relationships. "We all live on a green Army bus..." sung to the tune of Yellow Submarine...lyrics by John Allen and John Bray. Giessen is an hour and a half north of Frankfurt, which is where our high school (FHS) was located. Monday through Friday from 7AM to 8:20 AM and from 3:00PM to 5PM, (unless there was a tie-up on the Autobahn we spent three plus hours on the bus. We had tape players for music and each other to talk to. Fifteen hours a week, sixty hours a month. That time was unique and it has forged the bonds that all tie us together today. It was the "culture of the bus", where you sat, and who was and/or not sitting with whom. Ah yes, the stories from the bus...and our cool bus drivers, Herr Hermann, Klaus und Clyde, "Mr. Nuremberg Ring " himself. If you had Clyde for your driver and one of the new buses you just knew that you would be at FHS early enough to hit the Snack Bar down at the IG Farben Building and still make it back to homeroom before the bell at 8:30. Yeah! Breakfast! "Vielen dank, Clyde. Bitte, machen Sie schnell und machst die Heise auf!"
